Flood Insurance Will Help You Weather the Storm
Flood insurance is not included in your homeowners’ insurance. Many people are unaware of this exclusion. A flood insurance policy is essential because flooding is the number one natural disaster in the United States and the most common natural disaster found in New Hampshire.
Flood maps, created by the United States government, indicate the locations of flood zones. If you live in a flood zone and hold a mortgage on your home, then your mortgage lender will require flood insurance. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a government-funded program operated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
You can still purchase flood insurance in New Hampshire if you do not live in a flood zone as long as your community participates in NFIP. You can find a list of participating communities at the Fema Flood Insurance website.
Heavy rains in New Hampshire are the culprit in most floods here. A few inches of rain can cause thousands of dollars in damage if water finds its way into your home. If you have surface water around your house from rivers, streams, ponds or lakes, you may be at even higher risk.
